Watercolor Painting "Carry me away!"

September 26, 2020

Today, I wanted to share with you the thoughts and feelings that resulted in my painting : "Carry me away"...

My life has been painted with many ups and downs so far, some of which greatly affected me and some others that filled my existence with joy and I'm sure it's pretty much the same for most of us.

I believe, although other people's life events might not be as significant in one's eyes but our different degrees of resiliency and how deeply we are affected by the each blow of reality, makes many of us go through the same emotional roller-coaster, irregardless of the true magnitude of those events. So, without judgment, I feel for any other human being's pain, no matter how big or small that might look compared to mine. As it is well said by Saadi Shirazi

"Human beings are members of a whole,
since in their creation they are of one essence.
When the conditions of the time brings a member (limb) to pain,
the other members (limbs) will suffer from discomfort.
You, who are indifferent to the misery of others,
it is not fitting that they should call you a human being."

And, back to the painting:

This ship makes me dream of the adventures it has gone through: tides and waves, rocks and birds, sunny skies and storms...like me, like us...When I look at this ship, I imagine that it is headed to the most peaceful island; where there is white sand everywhere, clear sky and sunny days, palm trees and calm big blue ocean, no worries and no stress...and I'm jumping on that ship with all my loved ones, sailing away and not looking back...

Well well well...let's get to reality and the painting process:

It all started with a sketch : I sketched the ship lightly, added first layer of ultramarine blue to the sky, some yellow ocher to the sails. With tissue, I removed some of the blue paint to reveal the white of the paper to indicate the clouds. then I added some light grey to bottom of some of the clouds to make them pop.

When that layer dried up, I added more layers of blue to the sky and Ocher to the sails in the shadow areas and also painted deeper green + indigo to the ocean waves...Adjusting and adding continued in layers for few more steps till the painting finished.

And here it is framed and signed and ready to sail away.

you can pick it up from my Etsy shop

Have a nice weekend everyone,
